Oops. And then something happened that we really didn't expect...our child got sick. Morocco does not have a healthcare system as we know it. There are public hospitals, but for better care there are private clinics that we recommend if something goes wrong. Outside the big cities and in the countryside, facilities are limited. Public hospitals generally do not provide very good care. But if there is panic, where do you start in a country where you cannot make anything of the language at that moment, and do not know how and what? Let us give you a helping hand:

Clinic

You will be asked how you are insured, but you can indicate that you do not know. A clinic would like to be paid by card or cash, you are not allowed to leave until payment has been made. If you indicate that you are well insured, they may charge a lot more. Because you have to pay immediately, you will probably have to make an advance. Contact your insurance directly and get advice. We didn't have time for this and we arranged it with our insurance afterwards. Either way, official reports from the clinic are needed! Make sure you get this before you leave, otherwise your insurance will not pay out.

Care tips

Please note that if there is illness or complex specialized care, you will have to be evacuated.

You must be insured for this, so make sure you have comprehensive travel, health and repatriation insurance. A good insurance policy for this is one that provides you with quick and good help. This is all possible through this intermediary .

Medical staff usually speak little or no English, and their manners are also different. In the Netherlands, for example, as a parent you are allowed to go to the operating room until your child is under anesthesia. That is not common here! If you want that, stand your ground and clearly indicate that you want this. They usually go along with this.

Vaccinaties

Vaccinations are recommended for Morocco. Those are:

Recommended

DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio)

Hepatitis A

Personal and travel related

Typhoid

MMR (Mumps, Measles, Rubella)

Hepatitis B

Tuberculosis (TB)

Rabies

Schistosomiasis

Check the vaccination opreis website for more information!
