The coin
The official currency in Morocco is the Dirham. Although Morocco has kept up with the times when it comes to modern payment options, it is still very common to pay in cash, especially in the souks. And even checks are still written, but we'll leave that aside for now!

Tips for debit card and cash
You cannot simply get banknotes outside Morocco. It is therefore useful to withdraw some money yourself in Morocco (there are many ATMs). This is cheaper than changing at the airport. It is best if you avoid large notes. It is better to use small money when you go shopping and keep small coins in your pocket for tips, parking and taxis.
You need cash everywhere in the markets, in the medina and in small shops.
You can also pay by credit card in hotels and department stores. Visa and Mastercard are common credit cards. American Express is also often accepted in hotels, which we are very happy to use because of the excellent conditions regarding travel, insurance and outings. If you want this too, take a look here
Banking matters
